After Briefcase, Yahoo! now shutting down Geocities

After Yahoo! closed Yahoo! Briefcase last month, this month, Yahoo! has announced closing of Yahoo! Geocities. Yahoo! Geocities has stopped accepting new customers and announcement has been made on Yahoo! GeoCities Help page that it will be closing down later this year which means closing of Free as well as Plus accounts –

I’m a GeoCities customer. What’s happening to my site?

Existing GeoCities accounts have not changed. You can continue to enjoy your web site and GeoCities services until later this year. You don’t need to change a thing right now — we just wanted you to let you know about the closure as soon as possible. We’ll provide more details about closing GeoCities and how to save your site data this summer, and we will update the help center with more details at that time.

As an alternative, Yahoo! Web Hosting service is suggested over the same page.

Geocities Closure

What appears from this sequence of actions to me is that Yahoo! is pulling off its hands from free storage services, trying to be a pure web-portal service and providing storage as added paid service.
