Photosynth from Microsoft

One of the much hyped techs online these days is from MS. This one is being developed by MS Research/Labs in collaboration with University of Washington. And as the About page says, there are no standards being followed for this technology.

Photosynth is a new technology which deals with digital photos. It takes a large collection of photos of objects/places, analyze all those photos for similarities and then transforms them for display in 3-D space such that they are very much linked/merged into each other.

As the introduction page says, with Photosynth you can:

  • Walk or fly through a scene to see photos from any angle.
  • Seamlessly zoom in or out of a photograph whether it’s megapixels or gigapixels in size.
  • See where pictures were taken in relation to one another.
  • Find similar photos to the one you’re currently viewing.
  • Explore a custom tour.
  • Send a collection to a friend.

There are algos being run in background to relate photos, then it shows those photos in different dimension like how will it look while standing in front of it or from rear, or if it was flying…kinda transition from slide-shows – there are also different controls provided in this s/w…one can zoom particular parts of photo to look at it more clearly. And they are boasting that just having a look at photo, they can relate the things inside to the links on web, like a pic of Eiffel Tower will point to its description in Wikipedia…interesting…and impressive 8M). But you have to bear with that logo of photosynth at top-left hand while viewing the collection – no a big prize I wud say, if app comes for free ;M)
It is something about multimedia which isn’t there in town for download right now, but will very soon in future. Right now all you have at your part is some downloadable videos which you can download to have a look at this 3D emerging () tech.
