This is what the present internet going to turn into after few years – the place where speed is not a limit at all. One can surf at Gigabit speed.

Internet2 (registered trademark) is a project is a non-profit partnership between 207 universities in USA & different industrial partners like Cisco, Prous Science, Comcast, Intel and Sun Microsystems (collectively called as Abilene Network) which plays around with the networking and develops/deploys networking applications/tech for achiving high speed data transfers. Some of the tech.s developed include IPv6, IP multicasting & QoS.

The primary goals include –

* Create a leading edge network capability for the national research community
* Enable revolutionary Internet applications
* Ensure the rapid transfer of new network services and applications to the broader Internet community.

Founded in 1996, Internet2 is and will remain a research test bed.

“Internet2 will never become part of the public Internet,” says Lauren Rotman, a spokesperson for the Internet2 consortium. “Internet2 is a stepping stone between the lab and the commercial marketplace, and will always be a testing ground. But we hope the technologies we develop will make it to the public.”

Here are some land speed records of Internet2 listed below –

IPv6 Category

Single Stream Class: 208,800 terabit-meters per second by a team consisting of members from the University of Tokyo, the WIDE Project, Microsoft Corporation, and others accomplished by transferring 585 gigabytes of data across 30,000 kilometers of network in about 30 minutes at an average rate of 6.96 gigabits per second.

Single Stream Class: 216,300 terabit-meters per second by a team consisting of members from the University of Tokyo, the WIDE project, and Chelsio Communication and other organizations by sending 1485 gigabytes of data across 30,000 kilometers of network over 30 minutes at an average rate of 7.21 gigabits per second.

So wat u hv to say – just imagine, one this much speed becomes reality in today’s world, between diff. cities, nothing else is gonna be a bar – Web 2.0 is already there for online rescue 😉

Much of the research for Internet2 is based around its high-performance backbone, called Abilene, that currently runs at up to 10 Gbps. But the Internet2 group is planning to upgrade Abilene to 80 separate channels of 10 Gbps each, using different wavelengths transmitted over fiber-optic cable. These channels could produce a mind-boggling 800 Gbps of bandwidth.

Feats like long distance live/video confs will no longer be dreams.
