IIT exams:3 lakh students try their luck

Nearly three lakh students across the country on Sunday appeared for Joint Entrance Examination for admission into IITs.

As many as 3980 seats are available for entry into seven IITs — Mumbai, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee.

Of these seats, 584 are reserved for SCs, 293 for STs and 117 for physically challenged.

A few days ago, HRD Minister Arjun Singh indicated Government’s move to introduce reservation for OBCs in Centrally-funded educational institutions which drew flak from students and academicians alike.

Many students apparently from upper castes said they were opposed to the move to reserve seats for OBCs contending this would deprive students from general category of the opportunity to study in these institutions.
